Ciclicross Copa Catala, Sant Joan Despi, Barcelona
The last time I was at a live cyclocross event was the 1992 Cyclocross World Championships in Headingly, Leeds. A young Roger Hammond won the juniors and Claudio Chiappucci was doing a decent job in the elites won by Mike Kluge. Different country, different era, and plenty of hype around CX these days with Rapha Supercross and all that. On a hot day, in November, good racing, pumping tunes and good people at the event organised by Club Ciclista Sant Joan Despi just within Barcelona's city limits. A pick of the memories, I didn't get on film. I was too busy applauding. In the juniors, 2 minutes into his race a young lad's tyres rolled off his rim. His race was effectively run and he was a contender. Bike shouldered, ran practically the whole lap to massive ovations, changed his wheel then went on to finish the race. No tantrums, no quitting. Good lad.
